The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto National Monument was established in October 2000 in order to preserve the rich biological, geological and recreational features of the mountains by the same name. The ranges, situated in southern California between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, rise from the desert floor to an elevation of 10,834 ft (3,302 m) and are a popular destination for backcountry hiking, horseback riding and more.
